Environmental Vibrations was presented as a part of BC Culture Days on October 2nd 2021 at the Port Coquitlam. Community Centre which is on the ancestral territory of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem First Nation).
I was born in Kuching, Sarawak in East Malaysia and immigrated to Vancouver, BC in 2002 when she was 6 years old. Inspired by this journey, Environmental Vibrations, explores the idea of home in the context of the global movement of peoples.
Environmental Vibrations is a community-engaged performance work that relates the idea of the global movement of peoples to the migration of birds. It feature dancer Kira Radosevic moving to my improvisations on the cello within a public space, bringing together different sounds and gestures that represent the journey of leaving and arriving home. The musical improvisation takes as its point of departure the Malaysian (Malacca Portuguese) folk tune Jinkli Nona. The work was composed/choreographed collaboratively with Kira Radosevic.
Environmental Vibrations was accompanied by a family friendly visual art workshop titled Send a Postcard Home! based on a watercolour process developed by Cherry Lu and Robin Lough. The performance and workshop was presented as a part of a larger community engaged event by Foolish Operations titled Moving, Resting, Nesting.
As a B.C Culture Days Ambassador, I was awarded a production budget and a 3-month mentorship during which. I was guided by Julie Lebel and other members of Foolish Operations.
